WHAT IS SPLOST?
SPLOST stands for Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. SPLOST is an optional one percent County sales tax, which the State of Georgia allows counties to collect to fund specific improvement projects. SPLOST must be approved by voters in a general referendum in order to be enacted.
Walton County voters have approved a series of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax programs, known as SPLOST, since the mid-1980s. This one percent sales tax has paid for County and city facilities, special projects, parks and recreation facilities, new roads and improvements, fire stations, and libraries around the county. Your pennies are working to keep Walton a great place to live, work, and play!
Voting for the continuation of the SPLOST, a 1% sales tax, is an equitable way to fund much needed capital projects in Walton County and our Cities. Simply put, the 1% sales tax is collected by everyone spending money in Walton County. Therefore, people who don't live in Walton County also help fund our SPLOST.
The goal of the SPLOST is to ensure every project funded by the SPLOST initiative will provide the County a higher level of service by increasing, improving, and enhancing all services, as requested by the voters. This will result in Walton County being a better place to live, work and play. While accomplishing these tasks, SPLOST shall work to minimize public inconvenience, protect public safety, and control the environmental impacts of the projects, in the most cost-effective manner possible.
